I like the theater version of war horse better, simply because it wasn't a waste of time. The movie's focus is on the juxtaposition between scenes with massive artilliary with horse and human relationships. This helps show the contrast between the tactics and the people fighting in the war. There is no place for prem-modern war tactics anywhere in this world. We have conventional bombs with blast yeilds of 25k tons of TNT, horses can't stop that. It's the same reason why you see police officers shoot people who throw rocks at their troop carrier. War used to be a meat grinder because our weapons were not advanced to the point of un manned drones, or easy access to heavy troop body armor and armoured personel carriers. The gas deployed in WWI basically had the same casualties 0on both sides of the war. These are "Industrial" tactics because ti requires a ton of construction and moving of heavy machinery. We had large bulky, primitave guns that required a ton of man power and resources to deplpy and use effectivley.
