Ethan, Luke, Matt - Methodology of Re-mamping Africa
It is a widely known fact that the post colonial africa is very unstable in many ways. This is because the countries that colonised africa did so with little regard for the native people. They took land based on what raw materials were in each country. They then proceed to exploit the weak and unorganized countries. The countries put tribes with military conflicts into the same country, as well as religions that had conflicts together. This is one of the reasons for the civil war in the congo. From this exploitation and lack of cultural awareness countries were not properly established. Many countries in this region have many official languages because of this fact. For this project we took into consideration several variables to try to help with the violence and conflict in the region today.
First we looked at access to raw materials and other economic resources. The reasoning being that war is statistically less likely to happen in democratic countries that have resources to trade. Also, by dividing resources among countries we attempt to reduce violent conflicts that occur due to lack of resources. This will also give countries more power when negotiating with each other.
Secondly we focused on language, this is important so countries formed share large populations of citizens that speak the same language. By reducing the number of languages spoken in each country we allow for a country to communicate with its citizens and reduce split populations. We also focused on grouping existing tribes and religions. We did this to try to prevent more civil war, and race related violence and oppression.
