Outline of Story:

Tibet was primarily a “We are a small, religious, and independent nation" according to the Dali Llama

China was a Communist Country under rule of Mao Zedong

Tibet had declared independence from China since 1912

In 1950 PLA soldiers invaded Tibet and by 1951 Tibet had surrendered.

During the invasion several CIA trained tibetan guerillas were supplied with airdrops to assist with fighting the communist

In 1951 Tibet signed a seventeen point agreement confirming China’s rule over Tibet.

A rebellion against the Chinese occupation was led by noblemen and monasteries and broke out in Amdo and eastern Kham in June 1956.

In 1959 China's military crackdown on rebels in Kham and Amdo led to the “lhasa” uprising Full-scale resistance spread throughout Tibet. Fearing capture of the Dalai Lama, unarmed Tibetans surrounded his residence, and the Dalai Lama fled to India

China implemented a “TAR” government comprised all ethnic tibets the head of the government is communist and not ethnically Tibetan. This is still in effect to this day.

According to Machiavelli a ruler best maintains control of his state by being feared rather than loved. He says that in order to maintain order you cannot be too generous or compassionate otherwise you risk being taken advantage of. A ruler must be strict but also must be fair otherwise the ruler risks being hated. The ruler also must maintain a strong army to defend against threats both outside and inside and in order to maintain order within the army he is allowed to do so by any means necessary, even if it is inhumane because the army must be in top conditioning. By remaining strict but fair the ruler inspires patriotism, According to Machiavelli  the ends justify the means because the state only exists for the ruler and that ruler must remain in power even if it means committing crime. He also argues that the people within the state are always going to act on human nature which states that people will always act out of there own self interest. He says that the ruler should not care for the welfare of his people because the state only exists for the ruler himself.

Thoughts and Reflections on: The Book of the Courtier

A courtier is a man in the Renaissance who is considered noble. He is most likely a prince or a lord and serves in the kings court. He is also highly educated and literate, which stands out because a lot of people in that time period were illiterate. In addition he must also be able to shred gnarly solos on any instrument he is given.He must dress well and adapt to the local cultures he is in. He is always well mannered and has a clean and funny sense of humor. He makes trustworthy friends and a good first impression. When serving as an advisor to the king his group is allowed to speak freely in the interest that will best suit them all. His group is loyal and wise. The perfect lady of the Renaissance is one who is modest and manages her home life cleanly and well. She is well mannered and well spoken and does not listen to gossip. She knows how to sing and dance and like the Courtier, shred gnarly on any instrument. These characteristics are very "Renaissance" in the fact that the whole movement was about starting to rise up out of the dark ages and establish a higher culture. The book also pushes for more literacy and a higher aptitude towards poetry and music. Education and art are some of the defining products of the Renaissance.

Return Of Martin Guerre - Thoughts on Identity

In the 1500s identity was found by using alternative methods like the cobblers records of molds, but also small markings such as birth-marks or scars. In earlier days it was much easier to be able to move into an area where no one new you and you could start your new life. Nowadays you could do that but it requires a lot of legal shenanigans because our identity is so hardwired. We have most of our lives online and in big corporations that completely severing us from that tie would be hard. Identity is everything that makes us up. If people called our body our identity all of our cells are replaced every seven years. Identity was much simpler in the 1500s because they did not have the Internet which adds a whole new angle to our lives. However it is easier to steal our digital persona now, with the rise of "catfishing" which is where you steal someones online identity and date someone else with it. With the rise of digital finance technologies it is also easier to steal someones financial identity. A lot of time the way I recognize family or old friends that I haven't seen in a while is I use their voice, or those subtle things that only they do, however even then I sometimes wave to a random person in the grocery store.

Technological innovation making the world flat as in “hot flat and crowded”

This photo is helping show the point of “flat” in the reading of Hot, Flat, and Crowded by having a ton of people all with the same pieces of modern technology. What flat is meaning is that everybody is caught up on modern technology and the world is technologically flat because of this wide spread amount. This is a bad thing because it raises the demand for our resources that we need. But this is also a good thing because it helps create a unity for communication all over the world that helps anyone from anywhere communicate

The technological innovation of nuclear weapons is changing the world. Countries are learning how to make this weapon and this is a bad thing because it makes every country more dangerous and makes the possibility of a nuclear war increase. This rize in weapons also creates an arms race to see who has better weapons and technology to give them more power.

One major technological innovation was the transformation from the phonograph to the phonautograph. The phonautograph was the first invention ever to record sound. This was revolutionary but it couldn't play the sound back. After this the phonograph was created and was able to play back the sound that it recorded unlike the phonautograph.

Nationalism:

Onward & Upward:

When nationalism becomes a driving force state violence follows. i.e Hitler, Stalin, China, North Korea.

The rise of the modern world saw many things happen, when city states became countries the rise of nationalism started to rise. Nationalism is defined as: patriotic feelings, or extreme patriotic feelings. When nationalism rises in a country state violence usually follows, this can be seen in WWII germany with the rise of Hitler, his nationalism caused an attempted world takeover. In China and Russia it lead to labor camps and state censorship. In North Korea it lead to deity-like dictators left over from the colonisation of Japan, and with their nationalism came a rouge nuclear entity.    

It can be seen today, because the only way Trump is so popular is because he is a nationalist

As with hitler one of the ways Donald Trump became so popular is because he is a nationalist. His campaign slogan is “make america great again.” which is nationalistic in nature. He also is so popular because he wants to try to make america more whitewashed, by sending away immigrants, refugees, and closing the borders off from our mexican neighbors. His racist comments also show a sense of nationalism because he doesn’t want to include everyone.  

Nationalism is also a great contributor to the conflict in WWI

The main reason why WWI was so deadly is because it was started by each country being too prideful, and having too many alliances, immediately sucking in each country attempting to fight for the honor and pride of his or her country. These nationalistic alliances would also cause many deaths in the war to come.  

Hot, Flat & Crowded:

Nationalism is somewhat declining with the rise of globalization

With the rise of globalisation, the flattening of the earth has made nationalism somewhat less important because you can connect with anybody anywhere and have instant communication regardless of what country you are in. With the rise of technology everyone is better able to be connected to everyone else making what country you are in pretty irrelevant.
